Abstract

1,224,320. Liquid-metal cooled reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 3 Dec., 1968 [5 Dec., 1967], No. 55201/67. Heading G6C. Liquid-metal in a reactor coolant circuit is circulated by a pump 16 disposed in a pool 50 in a reactor tank (not shown) having a concrete cover 10. The reactor core 13 is surrounded by a cylindrical wall 12 and the pump impeller 39 draws in coolant through the inlet 30 and expels it through downpipes 26 connected to the bottom of the wall 12 at the inlet side of the core 13. The coolant then passes from a plenum 14 above the core by ducts (not shown) to heat exchangers (not shown), the outlets from the heat exchangers exhausting into the pool 50. Pump mounting.-The pump 16 includes a casing 17 connected to a discharge trunk 18 having branch pipes 19 terminating in a skirt 23. The skirt 23 forms an extension of a plug 20 removably supported in a standpipe 21 in the cover 10, the plug including radiation shielding 32 and thermal insulation 33. The skirt 23 has holes 22 which are aligned with holes 25 in an outer skirt 24 integral with the standpipe 21 and in which the downpipes 26 terminate. Sealing rings 31 are provided between the skirts 23, 24. An electric motor (not shown) in the plug 20 drives the impeller 39 through a shaft 35, flexible coupling 40 and shaft 38. The shaft 35 runs in a thrust bearing 36 above a gas seal 37 and the shaft 38 runs in liquid-metal cooled hydrostatic bearings 42, 43.
