Abstract

1,224,084. Fluid-pressure brakes; valves. GIRLING Ltd. 2 April, 1969 [10 April, 1968], No. 28761/69. Divided out of 1,224,083. Headings F2F and F2V. An air-hydraulic balance valve for a tractor trailer braking system in which the air pressure braking of the trailer is controlled in accordance with the hydraulic pressure of the tractor system comprises a body 31 within which is an axially movable valve member 32 moved in one direction by hydraulic pressure applied to a piston 33 and in the other direction by air pressure acting on a diaphragm 34 which is carried by the valve member and divides the valve body into two chambers 35, 36 of which the first is in communication with atmosphere through ports 37 and the second has an outlet passage 38 which can be connected to brake actuators on the trailer wheels, the chamber 36 being also in communication through a valve seat 39 with an inlet 41 which is connected to a source of air under pressure. Between the inlet 41 and valve seat 39 is a small chamber 49 in which is located a valve head 51 normally held in engagement with the seat and cutting off communication between the inlet 41 and the outlet 38. Valve member 32 is loaded by a spring 53 to a position in which outlet 38 is in communication with the atmosphere through passages 47, a hollow sleeve 45, passages 48 and chamber 35. Hydraulic pressure applied to piston 33 cuts off outlet 38 from atmosphere and then opens valve 51.
