Abstract

1,223,637. Sorting apparatus. CHESHIRE Inc. 11 July, 1968 [13 July, 1967], No. 33151/68 Heading G4M. A machine for applying printed address labels 16 to mailing pieces 11-14 has an associated photo-cell 31 for detecting the position of a portion of the address e.g. a postal code, on each label, the position being altered on selected labels to indicate a change in grouped addresses. Apertures in a wheel 71 driven in synchronism with the labelling machine, are sensed by a photo-cell 82 to provide clock pulses G, and a number of these pulses are gated into a shift register 95 when one of the selected labels is sensed by photo-cell 31, the number depending on the selected position of the address portion. Gate 100 responds to a particular number of outputs from register 95 to set the bi-stable circuit 119 of one of sequentially selected delay circuits 111-114 to enable the associated counter 120 to count pulses from photo-cell 81, a solenoid 60 being operated a predetermined number of labelling cycles later, so as to raise stop 59 and cause the mailing piece with the selected label to be displaced from the shingled array on output conveyer 56-58. If the address portion is placed in another position; gate 103 enables counter 145 to produce a delayed signal to stop motor 40.
