Abstract

1,222,981. Making staples; rolling. GKN (SOUTH WALES) Ltd. 28 Jan., 1969 [17 Feb., 1968], No. 7868/68. Headings B3A and B3M. [Also in Division F2] A method of making a staple comprises the steps of continuously advancing a length of wire stock 20 past a station at which serrations are formed on the wire, cutting a length from the wire and bending the length to form a staple having two spaced, parallel legs 10, 11. Four rolls 21, 22 mounted on spindles 26 in bearings 25 define a rectangular aperture through which the wire is drawn. Intermeshing bevel gears 27 on the spindles 26 ensure that the rolls rotate at the same speed and teeth on the roll peripheries form the serrations which comprise barbs 17 having shoulders 19. The shoulders of the barbs formed by the rolls 21 face in a direction opposite to the shoulders formed by the rolls 22. The rolls may be adjusted to allow for wires of various diameter and they may be arranged in separate pairs. The serrations may be formed during a separate operation on a wire drawing machine.
