Abstract

1,221,029. Automatic circuit breakers; vacuum switches. L'EQUIPMENT GENERAL ELECTRIQUE. 2 April, 1969 [2 Oct., 1968], No. 17345/69. Heading HlN. An automatic circuit breaker has a movable contact 31 controlled by an operating rod 23 formed with a sloping shoulder 51; a pair of diametrically opposed balls 48 and a rotary latch 55 with surfaces 59 for retaining the balls in engagement with the shoulder and the contacts closed and recesses 60 into which the balls can retract to release the contacts. The balls 48 are held in a fixed cage 41. In the open position shown, a push-button 2 is latched to operating rod 23. When the button 2 is pushed down the rod 23 moves the contacts into engagement. As the balls 48 drop on to shoulder 51 a torsion spring 58 rotates the latch 55 to retain them (Fig. 12). The button 2 is latched down by a spring 36 and balls 25 are moved by the upper extensions 43 of cage 41 to release rod 23 from the button. This trip free arrangement may be omitted. Surrounding, and in series with, the contacts 31, 65 is a helical bimetal 67 having a lug 70 arranged to rotate the latch 55 to release the balls on overload. The latch may also be released manually by pulling a knob 3 surround. ing the push button and which acts on the latch by a plurality of helical splines 57 (Fig. 18, not shown). The circuit breaker is housed in a metal cylinder 1 which may be mounted by either of two threaded portions 5, 63; a plate 9 may be fitted for screwing to a bus-bar, the second connection being by a plug 66 and socket. A screwed coaxial connector is also described (Fig. 8, not shown) as well as simple screw or solder terminals (Figs. 6, 7, not shown). The contact space may be sealed by a bellows 31a and glass/ceramic seals and filled with gas or evacuated. The bimetal may be indirectly heated or be replaced by magnetic means or a device responsive to other than overload.
