Abstract

1,220,677. Surgical pacemakers. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 22 March, 1968 [23 March, 1967], No. 13827/67. Heading ASR. [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for the derivation of auxiliary power from the beat of a heart comprises a hollow cuff 1 to be secured around a blood vessel, the cuff having an outer wall which resists expansion while the inner wall will closely follow the peristaltic expansion and contraction of the blood vessel, the hollow cuff being filled with a liquid for the transmission of hydraulic power. As shown, for providing power to a pacemaker 7, the cuff 1 is of a synthetic plastics material fitted within a relatively rigid split collar 2 and arranged around an artery A, the cuff transmitting arterial pulses through a line 3 to a bellows member 4 which acts upon a transducer 5. The electrical output from the transducer is passed through a rectifier 8 to a battery 9 for energizing a cardiac pacemaker 7. In an alternative apparatus (Figure 1, not shown), an arterial liquid filled cuff (a) provides power to drive a motor (B), two hydraulic lines (e, f) transmitting pulses derived from the cuff as blood pressure waves (g) pass through it, the lines applying the pulses to the motor.
