Abstract
1,219,607. Mechanical seals; friction clutches. HORTON MFG. CO. Inc. 15 July, 1968, No. 33692/68. Headings F2B and F2C. A seal device for passing air between two relatively-rotating parts of a friction clutch comprises a shaft or hub 10 having an axial bore 12 and a sealing member 52 axially-slidable in a tubular casing 46 and urged by a spring 80 into contact with a rotary sealing member 44, stops 74 being provided in the casing to limit axial movement and prevent rotation of the sealing member within the casing. Each sealing member is provided with a bore for the passage of operating air which is supplied through the bore 12 in a stationary hub 10 and is delivered through a passageway 40 in a rotary hub 22 to axially-move an annular cylinder 24 into engagement with a friction plate 35 on a sheave 34. The annular cylinder 24 is axially-slidable on the hub 22 which is mounted for rotation on hub 16 by means of bearings 18, 20. The rotary sealing member 44 may be made of hard steel and the sealing member 52 may be made of a carbon and graphite mixture, the latter being fluted for receiving the stops 74 which are formed as dimples in the casing. The casing is retained in the hub 10 by a ring 90 and sealed thereto by an 0-ring 86. A felt washer 96 is used for lubricating the member 52.
