Abstract

1,219,363. Producing foam. MINISTRY OF TECHNOLOGY. 27 Feb., 1969 [Feb., 1968], No. 5790/68. Addition to 1,062,771. Heading B1C. Foam for fire fighting purposes is produced by cooling exhaust gases from a gas turbine engine 11, causing the cooled exhaust gases to entrain air at ambient temperature by passing the gases through a duct 15 having a throat 16, and passing the resulting gas mixture through a perforate screen 22 which is wetted with an aqueous foam producing solution, the velocity of the gas mixture when passed through the screen not exceeding 10 ft. per second. The exhaust gases may be cooled by spraying water into duct 14. The foam producing solution may contain ammonium lauryl sulphate, sodium lauryl polyethylene glycol ether sulphate and/or ammonium lauryl polyethylene glycol ether sulphate with or without a foam stabiliser e.g. hydroxymethyl cellulose, or a fatty alcohol.
