Abstract

1,218,297. Press knives. WILLIAM CROSLAND Ltd. 2 Sept., 1969 [18 Sept., 1968], No. 44448/68. Heading B4B. A cutting-out press tool comprises a knife blade 10 supported in a mounting 12 and at least one register device 15 having a register pin 16 mounted in a support 18 which is adjustably located in the mounting so that the distance of the pin from the adjacent cutting edge 11 of the blade can be varied. The support 18 is fitted into a bore formed in a block of wood forming the mounting 12, a metal backing plate 13 being secured to the block. The register pin 16 is loaded by a spring 20 so that the pin projects above the level of the knife edge in order to locate a piece of material 14, Fig. 3. The support 18 is held in the mounting block by a screw and nut 21, 22 so that by releasing the nut the support may be rotated to re-position the pin. The screw may be located in a groove (31, Fig. 6) in the curved wall of the bore (32) and the support retained by a washer (33) tightened by a nut (34); alternatively, the screw-and-nut device may be replaced by a wood screw. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the mounting block is formed from two layers of wood 35, 36 formed with a bore 37 and held by a central screw-and-nut 38. In a modification, the support may have the cross-section of a regular polygon and be fitted within a correspondingly shaped recess, adjustment being effected by removing the support from the mounting block and replacing it in a desired position. The register pins may be rigidly mounted in the support and co-operate with recesses formed in a plate 24 which contacts the knife edge. In operation, pressure may be applied to the plate 24 to cut the material 14 by means of a roller or platen press.
