Abstract

1,218,224. Vinyl chloride. SOLVAY ET CIE. 12 Sept., 1968 [20 Sept., 1967], No. 43451/68. Heading C2C. Vinyl chloride is obtained by partially condensing the crude products of the pyrolysis of 1,2 - dichloroethane under super-atmospheric pressure to obtain a liquid phase and allowing this liquid phase to mature for at least 2 hours at 0‹ to 100‹ C. The uncondensed products from the pyrolysis zone and the matured liquid fraction may be passed directly to a distillation column in which low-boiling impurities are removed and from which the sump product is passed to a second distillation column in which high-boiling impurities are removed. Alternatively, the uncondensed pyrolysis products may be scrubbed with some of the matured liquid fraction prior to the distillation procedure. The unsaturation process may be assisted by the addition of a hydrochlorination catalyst, such as a metal chloride.
