Abstract

1,218,170. Artificial resin compositions. KANSAI PAINT CO. Ltd. 14 May, 1969 [21 May, 1968], No. 24478/69. Headings C3B, C3P and C3R. [Also in Division B2] A primer composition (A) comprises a solution (B) in organic solvent (C) of an artificial resin (D) and a powder (E) of particle size # 100 Ám. Resin (D) is phenolic, epoxy, and/or a copolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride. There is 15-50% wt. (D) based on weight of (B). Powder (E) is Al, Ag, Cu, bronze, C black, acetylene black, or graphite. 10-60 parts by wt. (E) based on 100 parts of (D) are dispersed in (B), the amount being such as to produce a dry film having volume resistivity 10<SP>9</SP>-10<SP>14</SP> ohm-cm., (E) may have particle size 0À001-10 Ám. Solvent (C) may be e.g. toluene, xylene, mineral spirits, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, and/or cyclohexanone. Pigments or fillers are preferably absent or present in small quantities only. Coating with primer composition (A).-The surface of a base metal, e.g. a cold-rolled steel plate may be coated by dipping, brushing, casting, rolling, spraying, or electrostatic spraying, and then dried to provide a film 3-100 Ám thick. Resin powder is then deposited on the film by conventional dry electrostatic coating methods; the film volume resistivity of 10<SP>9</SP>-10<SP>14</SP> ohm-cm. being such that the resin powder may be deposited to the desired thickness without mutual repulsion. The article is then stored to melt the resin powder, forming a continuous and even resin film. The resin powder may be epoxy resin, olefin polymer, polyester, polyamide, PVC, polycarbonate, and/or cellulose derivatives, and may contain pigments, fillers, plasticizers, curing agents, or stabilizers. Exemplified are (1) polyamide particles mixed with 5% rutile TiO 2 , the composition having softening point 150‹ C., grain size passing 150 mesh and volume resistivity 10<SP>11</SP> ohm-cm. (2) 100 parts PVC particles mixed with 30 parts dioctyl phthalate, 6 parts rutile TiO 2 , and 3 parts organic tin compound, the composition having grain size passing 100 mesh, softening pt. 110‹ C., and volume resistivity 10<SP>10</SP> ohm-cm.
