Abstract

1,217,820. Fuel injection systems for I.C. engines. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Jan.3, 1968 [Oct. 7, 1966], No.44753/70. Divided out of 1, 216, 462. Heading F1B. Fuel is supplied to a plurality of nozzles 65 in an intake manifold 60 with an air throttle valve 62 by a pump 74 through metering and distributing apparatus 66, 71. The delivery of the metering and distributing apparatus is controlled by a cam 95 which determines the position of the stop 69 for the metering shuttle 68. The cam 95 is mounted on a lever 102 connected by a lever 100 to a part 99 angularly adjustable by a bi-metallic element 84 and a valve member 87 operated by an evacuated capsule 85. The element 84 and capsule 85 are subjected to manifold air temperature and pressure conditions. The lever 102 is also connected to a piston 91 subjected on opposite sides to the pump output pressure and the pressure of fuel between a restriction in a passage 92, connecting opposite sides of the piston, and the valve member 87 which controls a spill passage 93, 94 to the pump inlet. The capsule 85 has a compartment 104 connected to the engine exhaust system. The distributer 71 includes a disc rotated through a shaft 72 by the engine. An electrically driven pump 78 to provide fuel for starting is connected in parallel with the engine driven gear pump 74 drawing fuel from a reservoir 75 through a filter 76. The pumps are provided with a pressure-relief by-pass valve 80. The nozzles 65 are located downstream of a turbosupercharger 61 and immediately upstream of respective engine cylinder intake valves. To provide excess fuel for starting the shuttle stop 70 may be adjusted by a manually-operable cam 107. The stop 70 may be moved to prevent shuttle operation and therefore fuel delivery.
