In an hydraulic brake system, a master cylinder is arranged so that during an initial phase of its working stroke, fluid can flow from the annular chamber surrounding tubular stem 9 through bores 12 to the interior of tubular stem 9 so that the full area of the piston is effective, and during a final phase of the stroke when the fluid pressure reaches a given level a seal (16) in annular recess 14 moves to a position (Fig. 3, not shown) in which it blocks off fluid flow from the annular chamber to the interior of the tubular stem so that only the area of the inner part of the piston is effective. Valve 10 allows surplus fluid to pass, via restriction 11, to a reservoir (not shown).
