1,216,195. Stabilizing polymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 March, 1968 [17 March, 1967; 2 Oct., 1967], Nos. 12565/67 and 44779/67. Headings C3P, C3Q and C3R. Polymers are stabilized by incorporating (a) a hydroxybenzylamine of formula where A represents wherein R 1 and R 2 are C 1-12 alkyl, C 5-8 cycloalkyl or aralkyl, R 3 is A, R 1 , C 1-12 hydroxyalkyl, aralkyl or alkaryl and R<SP>4</SP> is R 3 or hydrogen, or wherein R 3 and R 4 together with the nitrogen atom from a heterocyclic ring, together with (b) a triaryl phosphite wherein the aryl group may be substituted by alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxyl or chlorine, or (c) a cyclic phosphite ester, or (d) a monoester of phosphorous acid. Specified polymers are natural rubber, polymers of methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, ethylene, propylene, 3- methylbutene-l, 3- or 4-methyl pentane-1, copolymers of acrylonitrile and styrene with or without butadiene, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyethylene terephthalate, polyurethanes and polyethers. Conventional stabilizers and other additives may also be present. Examples describe the stabilization of 4-methylpentene-1/n-decene copolymers with (1) a conventional anti-oxidant, N,N-di-(3,5-di-tbutyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl) ethanolamine and triphenyl phosphite or trimethylolpropane phosphite, and (2 and 3) a conventional antioxidant dilauryl thiodipropionate, N,N-di-(3,5-di-tbutyl-4-hydroxybenzyl) ethanolamine and 2,2- di-hydroxymethyl) butyl phosphite; of natural rubber with (4) N,N-di-(3,5-dibutyl-4-hydroxybenzyl) ethanolamine and 2,2-di-(hydroxymethyl) butyl phosphite; and polypropylene with (5) 3-methyl-b-t-butyl phenol/crotonaldehyde condensate, N,N-di-(3,5-di-t-butyl-4- hydroxybenzyl) ethanolamine and 2,2-dihydroxymethyl) butyl phosphite.
