[Also in Division F2] In a planetary change speed gear (see (Division F2) concentrically arranged axially overlapping cylindrical drums 81, 49 which are required to have both internal and external splines 82, 79 and 58, 48 respectively to enage complementary splines on interleaved friction disc packs of ratio-establishing clutches 91, 70 and brake 46, are made from sheet metal drums in which the internal and external splines are formed as radially overlapping corrugations, see Fig. 4, by rolling a profiled roller axially over the drum whilst it is mounted on a profiled mandrel. The internally splined discs of the pack 91 are splined to an inner drum 108, and the externally splined discs of the pack 46 to the casing and the radial dimensions of the packs are in the ascending order shown. Due to this, and to the radial overlap of the splines on the drums, each of the externally splined discs of all three packs 81, 70, 46 can be punched from a single sheet metal blank, as can also each of those of the internally splined discs.
