Abstract

Further closing of the buckets 11, Fig. 2, of a grab is prevented by an overload device which produces an electric signal proportional to the tension in the closing ropes 10. The signal prevents further closing of the grab and causes the hoisting ropes 11 to be wound in. This produces a certain amount of spillage and lowers the tension in the closing ropes thus stopping the hoist motor and allowing the closing movement to be completed. The safe load may be detected either by a current measuring device in the motor circuit for the closing ropes or by load cells 18, Fig. 3, which support a pivoted subframe 14 on which the closing winch 12 and motor 13 are mounted. As a further safety measure load cells 20 may be placed beneath a sub-frame 17 which supports the hoist winch 15 and motor 16.
