Abstract

1,215,151. Battery-electric vehicles. R. H. BRAUNE. 6 March, 1968 [6 Dec.; 1966], No. 54631/66. Heading B7H. In a battery-electric vehicle, a road wheel shaft is driven through a mechanical transmission by an electric motor 10 forming part of a self-contained power unit comprising the motor 10, a battery 16 and associated electrical control gear housing in a common casing which is mounted on or forms part of a wheeled chassis. The power unit is as described in Specification 1,215,692, there being attached to the power unit casing a forward frame 36 supported by a tiller-controlled steerable wheel, and bearing blocks 31 mounting a shaft 30 which carries a pair of rear wheels and is driven from the shaft of the motor 10 through spur gearing 13 and a toothed belt drive 32 or differential gearing. The power unit casing may support a seat for an operator, and two or more power units may be combined in a single vehicle. The vehicle may be an invalid carriage, a personnel carrier, or a pedestrian-controlled truck. The vehicle may serve as a mobile source of electric power derived from the battery or mechanical power derived from the shaft 30 after jacking up the rear wheels.
