Abstract

1,214,241. Lock nuts. REX CHAINBELT Inc. 14 Feb., 1969 [27 Feb., 1968], No. 8145/69. Heading F2H. A fastener assembly comprises a screw 172 having external threads 174, a nut 190, 192, 198 having a bore provided with internal threads 194 and an elongated pin 202 mounted on one of the members comprising the screw and nut for movement therewith relative to the other member, the pin being frictionally received in a bore in the other member. As shown, the pin 202 is mounted in the portion 198 of the nut by a pin 204, the nut being held captive on the lower member of two members to be fastened together by two cages 210, 214 connected by rivets 218 to the lower member. The cage 210 has a square opening 208 and engages the square shank 192 of the nut to prevent rotation of the nut. The screw 172 has a bore 186 and a head 176 provided with, for example, a cross-shaped screwdriver slot 178. The screw is surrounded by a bushing 148 provided with a lip 182 which engages a groove 184 in the screw to ensure that the bushing moves axially with the screw when the screw is tightened on to the nut, the pin 202 frictionally engaging the bore 186 to lock the nut on the screw. When the screw and bushing are in a retracted position, detents 168 abut a counterbore 152 in the upper member 156 whilst projections on a retaining ring 144 engage longitudinal slots in the bushing to hold the screw and bushing in their retracted positions. A modification is described in which the pin 202 is mounted in the screw and frictionally engages a bore in an internally threaded member. The pin 202 may be tubular or solid, of circular cross-section and may have longitudinal or helical slots or it may be formed of a coil of wire. The pin may be made of spring steel, nylon or fibrous material or it may have a filling of plastics material.
