Abstract

1,213,331. Drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 28 Aug., 1969 [28 Aug., 1968], No. 41163/68. Head- F2E. In a drum brake in which a pair of brake shoes, mounted within the drum upon a backplate 1 extending perpendicular to the axis of the drum, can be moved apart into braking engagement with the drum by means of a mechanical expander 2 mounted on one side of the backplate and connected between the shoes, the expander is mechanically coupled to a motor unit mounted on the opposite side of the backplate and having the line of action thereof parallel to the backplate, the motor unit comprising a coil compression spring 27 tending to extend the expander to move the shoes apart and apply the brake, and an hydraulic pistoncylinder assembly 21, 24 to which fluid can be supplied under pressure to overcome the force of the spring and contract the expander. As shown, the expander 2 comprises an inner member 6 and tubular outer member 7 acting between brake shoes 3, or members which transmit thrust thereto, and respectively connected by bifurcated levers 9, 10 to spring cups 25, 23 which are urged apart by the spring 27 to apply the brake. Release of the brake is effected by admitting pressure fluid to the working space of the cylinder to contract the spring. The brake may be used for parking, or as a service brake.
