Abstract

1,212,621. Treating I.C. engine exhaust gases; exhaust silencers. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. July 31, 1968, No.36621/68. Heading F1B. A device 12 in an exhaust system upstream of a catalytic reactor 12a comprises a casing 20 having an inlet 22 and an outlet 23 and a perforated conduit 24, spaced from the casing, extending from the inlet and ending in a reduced cross-section orifice 27 and a nozzle 26 adjacent the outlet. The cross-sectional area of the orifice 27 is less than the area of the perforations 25. Air is supplied to the exhaust gases immediately downstream of the engine exhaust valves (15), Fig. 1a (not shown), by an air pump 14 through pipes 14<SP>1</SP>. The catalyst in the reactor 12a may be formed of a substrate of stainless steel wool on which is deposited an adherent film of alumina impregnated with one or more oxidation catalysts, e.g. a copper oxide-copper chromite complex. A valve 13 downstream of the reactor 12a provides for maintenance of a minimum predetermined back pressure at idling and low engine speeds.
