A multi-component filament is melt- or solution spun from at least two different polymer melts or solutions by dividing a stream of a first polymer melt or solution into at least two independent streams and bringing one into contact with a stream of a second polymer to form a first composite stream; subsequently bringing another of said independent streams into contact with said first composite stream to form a second composite stream preferably in the spinneret orifice which is forced through a spinneret to produce the multi-component filament. The apparatus shown for producing a bicomponent filament comprises a spinneret plate 2 with orifices 3, feed conduits 4 and 6 for introducing polymer streams A, B respectively in the direction of the arrows. A separating baffle 7 which has sharp upper and lower edges 8, 8<SP>1</SP> set over spinneret plate 2, divides stream B into two streams B<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>11</SP>. B<SP>1</SP> comes into contact with A to form the first composite stream which is then contacted with B<SP>11</SP> in the orifice 3 to form the second composite stream which is then forced through the orifice. In the embodiment shown the orifices are circular and the baffle is a cylinder set across the centres of the orifices. The cross-section of the baffle may be greater, equal to or less than that of inlet 9 of conduit 4. Bicomponent filaments may be made from polycaproamides of relative viscosities 2À10- 2À20 and 2À80-2À90 respectively or from polyethylene terephthalate and its copolymers.
