Abstract

1,150,399. Spinneret for conjugate filaments. INVENTA A.G. FUR FORSCHUNG UND PATENTVERWERTUNG ZURICH. 5 April, 1968 [6 April, 1967], No. 16572/68. Heading B5B. In a process for the production of conjugate filaments of two or more polymers from streams of melts or solutions of the polymers having different viscosities, in which the streams are spun together in the proportions necessary to form the desired filament through a spinneret plate having a planar outlet side, the spinneret holes are perpendicular to the plane of the plate and the cross-section of each hole is so shaped as to impose increased frictional resistance on the stream of lower viscosity to offset the tendency of the conjugate filament to deviate from the axis of the spinneret hole, so that the streams unite within the holes and emerge together from them and flow thereafter at least substantially perpendicularly to the plane of the plate. A theoretical discussion is given. Figs. 2, 6 and 8 show cross-sections of spinneret holes suitable for the extrusion of conjugate filaments of round cross-section, the stream of lower viscosity flowing in either case through the zone 1, Figs. 3 and 4 show cross-sections of spinneret holes suitable for filaments of Y-shaped crosssection, Fig. 5 shows a hole suitable for filaments of flat strip-like cross-section, Fig. 9 one suitable for a lobed filament, and Fig. 7 shows a form of spinneret hole for two-component hollow filaments. The spinneret hole has a core 3 with a bore 4 through which the gas producing the cavity issues during spinning. It is also possible for a third polymer component to issue through the bore 4, so that a threecomponent core-and-sheath filament is formed, said filament having a sheath composed of two different polymers.
