Abstract

1,212,194. Emergency lighting systems including rechargeable batteries. ALKALINE BATTERIES Ltd. 14 Feb., 1968 [17 Feb., 1967], No. 7618/67. Heading H2H. An emergency lighting system comprises two easily detachable units 10, 12, the unit 12 being portable and containing a battery 20 and lamps 21, 22 and the unit 10 being fixed and containing the supply terminals such as the pins 14-16 and other ancillary apparatus used in charging the battery 20; the arrangement being such that, when the units are engaged with one another by jack and socket 30, 38 and the supply is present at sockets 17, 18 engaged with pins 14, 15, the battery 20 receives a trickle charge and; when the supply is absent, illumination is supplied by the lamps energized from the battery 20; furthermore the unit 12 may be detached from the unit 10 and used as a portable lantern. The charging circuit comprises a transformer/relay device comprising primary winding 26, secondary winding 28 and an armature 34 operative by the flux in the core 33 to actuate contacts 35. When the supply is present the contacts 35 are open and the battery is charged from the secondary winding 33 by way of a rectifier 24, the lamps 21, 22 giving an indication that charging is taking place since contacts 36, 37 are broken when the jack/ socket 30, 38 is assembled. When the supply fails contacts 35 close and the lamps are energized from the battery by way of contact 35. To use the unit 12 as a portable lantern it is detached from the unit 10 whereupon contacts 36, 37 close to enable the lamps to be energized by the battery.
