Abstract

1,209,354. Compensators for fluid pressure brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 4 Feb., 1969 [20 Feb, 1968], Nos. 8151/68 and 41729/68. Heading F2F. A compensator for an hydraulic braking system of the kind in which fluid under pressure is supplied to slave cylinders on wheels on opposite sides of a vehicle by separate master cylinders 35, 36 each operated by its own pedal, comprises a cylinder 19 adapted to be connected on opposite sides of a piston 26 working in the cylinder to the outlets from the master cylinders, the piston normally being held in a substantially central position in the cylinder by two oppositely acting springs 32, 33 of different strengths which hold the piston in engagement with a locating stop 24; the piston is free to move in either direction against the resilient resistance of the springs under differential pressures in the cylinder on opposite sides of the piston. As shown, the piston is provided with an O-ring seal 27 and has spigots 28, 29, the spigot 29 passing through a washer 31 held against a shoulder 24 by the spring 32 which is of greater strength than the spring 33. The cylinder 19, as shown may be integral with the master cylinders. An increase in fluid pressure in the smaller end of the bore 23 causes the piston to move to the right as seen in the Figure against the pressure of the spring 32 and assisted by the spring 33 and taking with it the washer 31, the travel of the piston being limited by the spigot 29. In the event of failure of a pipe line or other part of the hydraulic system on one side of the vehicle the piston moves axially until one of the spigots abuts the adjacent end of the cylinder whereby the brakes on the other side of the vehicle can still be applied. In a modification, the O-ring seal is omitted and rubber-faced sealing members provided on the ends of the spigots engage and close off ports at the ends of the cylinder.
