Abstract

1,209,341. Cleaning carpets. WERNER & MERTZ G.m.b.H. 3 Jan., 1968 [5 Jan., 1967; 20 April, 1967], No. 436/68. Heading A4F. [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] Forming foam. Foam is produced by direction of an endless band of spongy material past a compression zone extending at right-angles to the direction of movement, supplying the foam components (e.g. air and foam-producing liquid) behind the compression zone and removing from ahead of it. Cleaning apparatus for carpets and upholstery, Fig. 1, comprises a "sponge" roller 5 having an impervious outer casing 1 and fixed to a perforated inner support tube 6 which rotates on a stationary hollow cylindrical axle 8. The axle has a compartment 10 to which are supplied air and foam-forming liquid, which pass through slits 17, 9 into the sponge behind the compression zone formed by contact with the support surface 3, foam being forced back into compartment 16 through the slit 14 and then discharged in front of the roller by tubes not depicted. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the liquid component is supplied separately from the air through a tubular channel 11 and compression of the roller is not effected by contact with the support surface 3, but by an abutment, such as a pair of eccentric discs rigidly attached to the ends of the hollow axle 8 with their outer edges bearing on the inner face of projecting edges of the outer casing 1. In a modification (see Fig. 3, not shown), the channel 11 may be formed between two diametrical partition walls as at 13. The "sponge" 5 need not be cellular or elastic and a wide range of materials is specified as suitable; it may consist of separate pieces as in Fig. 2, which may be encased in filter cloth, and inserted under initial stress between the casing 1 and support tube 6. The hollow axle 8 may be extended and bent at a right-angle to form a handle which may be long enough for operation in the standing position and may also act as a supply tube for liquid from a container, the discharge from which is regulated by a constant level device. The outer casing 1 has transverse ribs 2 shaped so that when the apparatus is pulled backwards the friction is insufficient to rotate the roller, but the foam is rubbed into the support surface 3.
