Abstract
1,208,730. Making dies; stamping; working at specified temperatures. PRESSED STEEL FISHER Ltd. 18 Dec., 1967 [23 Dec., 1966], No. 57755/66. Headings B3A, B3Q and B3V. A method of forming a superplastic alloy plate or sheet comprises heating the sheet to within the superplastic temperature range, forming it using at least one die, passing a gas through the die to cool the formed sheet to a temperature at which it is sufficiently rigid not to be permanently deformed during stripping, and increasing the gas pressure to strip the formed workpiece from the die. Apparatus for performing the method may be as described in Specification 1,208,729, and include on the die (19) a steel sealing flange (23) having radial gas-exhaust slots. Alternatively a porous die may be used. Compressed-air may be passed through the ducts during the forming operation to act as a gas cushion on the die-surface. At the end of a forming operation, the pressure of the gas cushion is allowed to fall for the cooling stage, after which it is increased for ejection.
