Abstract

[Also in Division H5] In a device for cracking hydrocarbons and their substituted derivatives such as alcohols, phenols and amines in liquid phase and in the pure or mixed state by means of a submerged intermittent electric arc in order to produce a gaseous mixture such as acetylene and ethylene, one or more pairs of movable electrodes 9, 9<SP>1</SP>, are secured to a rotary support 10 at uniform angular intervals and come successively into contact with two adjustable stationary electrodes 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, in a plane at right-angles to the axis of rotation of the support 10 (see Division H5). The impact of the meeting electrodes keep them clean. A specific example processing kerosene or paraffin oil in the reaction vessel 1 to obtain a gaseous mixture of acetylene and ethylene is described.
