Abstract

1,207,207. Lubricating. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. 1 May, 1968, No. 20566/68. Heading F2A. A lubricant control system effects the supply of lubricant at selective rates to an enginedriven compressor so that the rate of lubricant supplied corresponds to the speed of the compressor. In an embodiment, an engine 11 drives a compressor 13 which supplies compressed air to a receiver 17, via an outlet 16, a check valve 19 and a pipe 18. Compressed air is supplied from the receiver 17 to a point of application (not shown) via a Venturi 28 and an outlet 21. Lubricant is circulated by means of a pump 22 and is delivered to an inlet 24 in the compressor 13. The lubricant circuit comprises flow regulator means 63, a cooler 64 and a junction 54; the latter communicating with lubricant collected in the receiver 17 or with lubricant collected in a sump 51 in a by-pass 39, according to the position of solenoid-actuated valves 43 and 61. In use, when compressed air is withdrawn from the outlet 21, the compressor is operating at compressing speed, and increased air pressure in a manifold 12 of the engine 11 acts against a diaphragm 48 so as to activate a switch 44. The valve 43 is closed so that lubricant cannot circulate through the by-pass 39 and the lubricant circuit is completed through the junction 54 and the receiver 27. Increased air pressure in the manifold 12 also actuates control means 33, 34 and 63 to allow an increased flow of lubricant to the compressor. When compressedair withdrawal from the outlet 20 ceases, the switch 44 closes, the solenoid valves 43, 61 are returned so as to close the lubricant circuit and re-open the by-pass 39, and the control means 33, 34 and 64 reduce the flow of lubricant to the compressor which is now driven at idling speed. The speed of the engine 11 may be regulated by means of pressure-actuated control means 29 which is connected to the Venturi 28 by means of a pipe 27 and to a governor 26 by means of a member 32.
