1,207,072. Centrifugal pumps. R. M. FAYS, R.J. FAYS and R.H. FAYS. March 4, 1969 [March 5, 1968], No.11483/69. Heading F1C. [Also in Division H2] A centrifugal pump comprising a casing 1, Fig. 1, having an inlet 2 and an outlet 3, has one or more magnetizable rolling pumping elements 6, 7 rotated around an annular race 4, 5 by a rotating magnetic field. The elements also rotate about their own axes and thereby produce the centrifugal pumping effect. The elements may be spherical as shown, or ellipsoidal or cylindrical. The rotating magnetic field is created by a rotating U-shaped permanent magnet 9 or a rotating electromagnet, or by a circular group of stationary electromagnets energized by an A. C. current through a rotary contact. The inlet 2 need not be central as shown, and may be inclined to the casing to introduce fluid into the casing with a swirling motion. The outlet 3 may be radial or tangential. The elements may be coated with corrosion resistant p. t. f.e. or polyacrylic resin. The race may be coated with polyacrylic resin, and the casing may be of p. t. f. e. or of reinforced transparent material. In a multi-stage pump, Fig. 3 (not shown), the casing contains three radiallyspaced concentric races each provided with two rolling elements. A rheostat may be used to effect progressive starting of the pump.
