Abstract

1,207,028. Centrifugal separators. PALL CORP. 11 Nov., 1968 [14 Nov., 1967], No. 53227/68. Heading B2P. A vortex separator for removing solid contaminants from gases comprises a tubular body 1 with a constriction 20 adjacent its inlet 2, and a convexly curved surface 22 leading from its inlet to the constriction, a vaned deflector 6 adjacent the constriction to create a vortical flow of the contaminated gas and effect separation of the contaminants from the gas, and a cleaned gas tubular outlet member 10, with one end extending into the outlet 3 of the body 1 to define an annular passage 12 for the removal of the separated contaminants. A straight sided tapered diffuser portion 24 leads from the constriction into the deflector. Alternatively, Fig. 2 (not shown), a rightangled shoulder against which the deflector abuts is formed between the constriction and the wall of the tubular member. The parts 20, 22, 24 may be integral with the tubular body or the part 20 and/or the part 22 may be formed as an insert member fitted into the body. The curve defining the convexly curved surface 22 may be a segment of a lemniscate or parabola or an arc of a circle. The tubular body 1 may be wholly cylindrical or may have a flared, straight-sided or curved outlet portion 15, it may be moulded from plastics, e.g. nylon, polyurethane polypropylene, polycarbonate or polyphenylene oxide, or made from steel, stainless steel or a nickel alloy. The outlet member 10 which is generally tapered is made of polyurethane rubber and is supported by tabs formed thereon and extending to the wall of the body 1 or by a back plate. The deflector 6 may be made from the same or a different material from the tubular body and comprises a number of helical vanes 5 which may be tapered in thickness from front to back and which may be supported on a central hub having a dome-like or blunt tip which may extend beyond the inlet and which may be used to support a guard screen in front of the tubular body. The vanes of the deflector may be bonded to the body 1 by a resin adhesive 8 or the deflector may be press-fitted into the body. The separated contaminants may be removed from the separator by means of a blower or compressor connected upstream of the separator or by means of an eductor at the discharge end. A number of separators may be groupted together as an array of tubes with their outlet members supported by a common back plate. The separator may be used as an air cleaner for the engine of an aircraft, e.g. a turbine-driven helicopter, or of earth-moving equipment.
