A vehicle sliding door assembly comprises a swingable and slidable door 11 which is swung by means of a pivot arm 5 mounted substantially in the centre of one vertical edge of the closed door by a hinge joint 4 on a support 3 on the vehicle wall 1, the pivot arm 5 having at its free end rollers 7, 8, 13 which engage a rail structure 22 to guide and retain the door on the vehicle. The roller 7 which rotates about a horizontal axis engages the underside of a carrier 12, of the structure 22 mounted on the door 11. The rollers 8, 13 are mounted to rotate about vertical axes on an angle bracket 6 on the arm 5 and engage a rib 9 on the structure 22 mounted on the inside 11a of the door 11. To open the door, the pivot arm 5 is rotated about the hinge 4, the door 11 thus moves outwards from the vehicle body 1, and the roller 13 is disengaged from a recess 14 in the door, guided by a curve 15 in the rib 9. The door now slides parallel to the vehicle body 1, a support roller 16 mounted on the door 11 to rotate about a horizontal axis engaging with a guide rail 17 mounted on the vehicle body 1. To prevent lifting of the door, a horizontal stop 21 mounted on the rib 9 engages with a counter member 20 on the rail 17, Figs. 4, 5. The top of the door is guided by a roller (18), Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), engaging an arcuate guide rail (19) on the vehicle body and the bottom of the door has a roller (23) engaging a correspondingly arcuate guide rail on the body.
