Abstract
1,206,611. Reflux crystallization. NEWTON CHAMBERS & CO. Ltd. 24 April, 1968 [25 April, 1967], No. 19048/67. Heading BIG. In a reflux crystallization apparatus comprising a column 1 having a central core 2, a close fitting rotary helix 3 between the column and the core, a cooler 4, and a heater 5, an auxiliary cooler and an auxiliary heater (not shown) are installed within the column. The column may have a larger diameter at the cooled end and may be of frusto-conical or stepped cylindrical shape. One or both contacting surfaces of the column and helix may be of PTFE. Spring- loaded scrapers may be situated on the edge of the helix or between its turns to prevent crystal deposition. Crystallization may be controlled by making the degree of cooling dependant on (a) the power required to drive the helix or (b) the light passing through the slurry in the column. A heating or cooling medium may be passed through a hollow helix.
