Abstract

1,206,105. Exhaust silencers. HENDRY BROS. (LONDON) Ltd. and L. FOTHERGILL. Nov.27, 1967 [Aug.31, 1966; Oct.27, 1966; June 8, 1967; Oct.13, 1967], Nos.38824/66, 48264/66, 26581/67 and 46864/67. Heading F1B. Gases flowing into an expansion chamber 9, at least in part provided with a permeable peripheral wall surrounded by an enclosed jacket 7 of soundabsorbing material, e.g. fibre glass, through a co-axial inlet 3, flow out of the chamber through the permeable peripheral wall of a co-axial outlet pipe 4 provided with a closed inner end. The gases from the pipe 4 may flow into a chamber 15 having outlet apertures 17. The sound-absorbing material may be inwardly supported by wire mesh (18), Fig. 3 (not shown), with # to # inch openings. In a further embodiment, Fig.4 (not shown), the outlet pipe (21) extends into an unjacketed portion (20) of the expansion chamber and the jacketed portion (9a) of the expansion chamber opens to the unjacketed portion through an aperture (19) in an intermediate wall (2b).
