Abstract

1466512 Exhaust gas silencers BURGESS INDUSTRIES Inc 18 March 1975 [20 Aug 1974] 11266/75 Heading F1B A plural stage gas stream silencer has a circular cross-section shell 1, 2 defining a plurality of treatment sections connected in series, each section having a central inlet opening 7, 11 and at least the side walls of the shells having their internal surfaces covered with a layer of sound absorbing material held in position by perforated inner shell means; and wherein a diffuser tube 4, 18 is mounted in each inlet opening and extends downstream therefrom into but not through the associated treatment section; each tube being open at its upstream end, closed at its downstream end and having perforated side walls, the distance from the side walls and the perforated inner shell being greater than four times the diameter of the perforations in the side walls, the sound absorbing material in the spaces 23 and 24 around the inlet section being filled with a durable material such as metal turnings and the space 25 around the next and any further sections being filled with a material having a high sound absorption capability, such as punched hair felt or glass fibre. The diameter of the inlet opening to the inlet section is limited by the size of orifice 7 in plate 6 so that it is one-third of the total area provided by the perforations in the diffuser tube. The perforations in the succeeding diffuser tube are smaller in diameter but together provide the same total flow area. End-wall 3 of the inlet section has a lining of copper or steel fibres held in place by perforated wall 19. The inlet section has an external wrapping 21 of a double layer of lead or asbestos sheet. The sections are bolted together through flanges 8 and 9 with interposed elastomeric spacers 13 to damp vibration. Alternatively one section may telescope over the other. The shell may be conical with the inlet at the small end. The wall of a diffuser tube may be extended beyond the closed end and covered with sound absorbing material.
