Abstract

1,205,976. Winding safety devices. VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISENUND STAHLWERKE A.G. 2 Nov., 1967 [4 Nov., 1966], No. 49942/67. Headings B8B and B8L. [Also in Division F4] A device for lifting and lowering an oxygen lance 1 vertically out of and into a top blowing converter, comprises a servic and an auxiliary cable 2, 4 wound on a common drum 3, the auxiliary cable 4 passing over a pulley 5a mounted on a spring 6 and the service cable 2 passing over a pulley 5b on a fixed axle, so that during normal operation the lance is carried mainly by the service cable. In the event of breakage of the service cable, the auxiliary cable takes all the load and the pulley 5a is deflected against the spring 6 to operate a switch 7 controlling the motor of the winding drum 3. A further motor switch may be provided to be operated when the spring 6 fully expands due to slack in the service cable. In the embodiment of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the cables each pass around a pulley on the lance carriage and has its end attached to a fixed structure, the auxiliary cable being fixed via a spring.
