Abstract

1,205,072. Laminated stair covering. BREVETEAM S.A. 14 Sept., 1967 [20 Feb., 1967], No. 41886/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division A4] A stair covering material consists of a web of textile material which has one of its edge portions covered by a strip of thermoplastic reinforcing substance applied thereto whilst heatsoftened. At least one additional strip of thermoplastic reinforcing substance may be disposed parallel to the first strip and similarly applied to the web. The strip(s) may be straight or sinuous, may be coloured or colourless and may include a luminous pigment. In one method of using the material a web having a width substantially equal to the combined front to back dimension of a stair tread and the height of a stair riser has the reinforcing strip(s) applied thereto and is cut transversely into pieces each of a length to cover the width of a stair tread to the desired extent. Each piece is then fixed to the stair with the edge portion of the piece carrying the strip(s) of reinforcing substance arranged parallel to the front edge of the tread and bent around the front edge, and with adjacent pieces meeting each other along their longitudinal edges. The strip(s) may be extruded on to the moving web from a nozzle or nozzles, which may be oscillated to produce sinuous strips. The pieces may be secured to the stair by a two-component adhesive, one component causing the adhesive effect to be increased at room temperature and the other component being thermoplastic components, which becomes highly adhesive on heating.
