Abstract

1,204,487. Power hammers; dividing. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 11 Dec., 1967 [13 Dec., 1966], No. 55855/66. Headings B3H and B3W. In an impulse forming machine having a piston 2 which seals an opening 14 in an energy chamber 15 and during the working stroke the seal is broken to produce a rapid movement of the piston, the working stroke is upwards. The energy chamber may be a combustion chamber in which a petrol-air mixture is ignited as described in Specifications 1,112,182 and 1,115,304. Alternatively the machine may operate on the diesel principle. The piston 2 has an integral or attached projection 17 which seals the opening 14 and is connected by tube 4 to a movable lower platen 5 which co-operates with a fixed upper platen 6. An ejector 21 is arranged within the tube 4. Sealing rings 3 are provided on the piston 2 and supplied with oil through holes 20. Vent holes 23 in the cylinder end plate 7 may be restricted by valves for controlling the pressure of air on the upper side of the piston to compress the next charge in the combustion chamber and also to effect the seal at 18. Pneumatic or hydraulic rams 24, 24<SP>1</SP> control the downstroke and may be used for " inching " the platen 5. The machine may be used for blanking out or cropping workpieces.
