Abstract

1,112,182. Forging. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. 4 Nov., 1964 [5 Nov., 1963], No. 43728/63. Heading B3H. An impact forging machine has its tool 16 actuated by the energy of combustion of a fuel or other release of chemical energy. The tool is secured to a ram 1 connected directly to a piston 3 biased inwardly by compressed air admitted through ports 20 and actuated on its working stroke by the combustion of petrol in chamber 9. After closing the exhaust valve 12, pre-heated compressed air, which may be taken from the lower end of the piston, is admitted to the combustion chamber through inlet valve 11 and fuel is admitted through atomizer 13. The machine is ignited by spark plug 21 after closing a vent-valve 14 in the cylinder head. The piston end seals the restricted outlet from the combustion chamber whereby the initial movement is slow followed by rapid acceleration. Additionally compressed gas may be used to assist movement of the ram. Relief valves are provided in the parts 20 to relieve pressure below the piston during the working stroke. A stationary tool 17 is mounted on the machine bed 18. The machine may be double-acting, of the kind described in Specification 1,112,181 and may be controlled automatically by a device as described in Specification 1,112,183.
