Abstract

1,203,463. Tape applicator. SUNDS A.B. 2 May, 1967 [10 May, 1966], No. 20303/67. Heading B8F. In applying adhesive tape to articles e.g. carton blanks 16 moving on a conveyer, tape is taken from reel 22, is wetted by wheel 28 and is fed by feed wheel 36 to taping wheel 82, the interior of which has suction applied thereto. A length of tape is cut off by knife 102 on wheel 82 co-operating with anvil wheel 104 and the cutoff portion of tape is located by the knife 102 and carried by wheel 82 into contact with the carton blank 16 between the wheel 82 and pressure wheel 108. The taping wheel 82 is driven in synchronism with the movement of the blanks and at a speed equal to the speed of the conveyer whereas the feed wheel 36 is driven through a variable speed gear at speeds not exceeding the speed of the taping wheel 82. The speed of the feed wheel 36 determines the length of tape cut off and the register of the tape with the blank can be adjusted by adjusting the position of the taping wheel 82 relative to the drive to the blank conveyer.
