Abstract

1,202,873. Propelling and steering ships. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 1 Dec., 1967 [2 Dec., 1966],No. 54157/66. Heading B7V. A marine propeller 5 is surrounded by a duct 2 which is mounted when only partly completed and is thereafter completed by modifying the inner wall thereof to provide the correct clearance between the tips of the propeller and the inner wall. As shown, the duct is provided with a dovetail recess 8 extending around its inner wall, the recess being filled with material of the required thickness in strip or tiled form. Examples of filler material recommended are lignum vitae, nylon, reinforced plastics or a rubber based compound. In an alternative arrangement the complete duct is made of one of, all but the first filler materials recommended, and completion of the duct is effected by rotating the propeller so that the tips remove the unwanted portions of the inner wall. The duct is pivotable on bearings 3 for steering.
