Abstract

1,202,746. Fifth wheel anti-jack-knife arrangements. G. R. NICHOL. 19 March, 1969 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 47827/67. Heading B7T. In an anti-jack-knife arrangement a tractor fifth wheel plate 6 is provided with holes 3, 4 and 5, below each of which there is provided a ram 7, the cylinders of the rams being fluid pressurized either automatically or manually when jack-knifing is sensed such that the pistons pass through their respective holes and into a hole 2 in a trailer rubbing plate 1, the ram either being retained in hole 2 to lock the fifth wheel solid or being forced out by virtue of its conical end 10 if the pivoting force between the tractor and trailer is great, whereby pivoting is retarded. Hole 5 is spaced from holes 4 and 3 respectively by distances 2<SP>2</SP>/ 3 p and 9<SP>1</SP>/ 3 p, where p is the arcuate distance between holes 2 in plate 1. Both sets of holes lie on circles having the king-pin axis as their centre. In a further embodiment a friction pad is recessed in fluidtight engagement in a groove in the upper surface of the plate 6, whereby pressurized fluid introduced into the groove forces the pad into engagement with the rubbing plate. In a modification the pressure fluid is introduced into an inflatable bag housed in the groove below the pad.
