Abstract

1,202,650. Mixed polyamide/polyester filaments. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 22 Oct., 1968 [23 Oct., 1967], No. 50041/68. Heading B5B. A dispersion of polyester in nylon, which polyester contains from 1-2 rings in the repeating unit of the main polymer chain and the polyester and nylon each being capable of being formed into a filament which can be cold drawn, whereby at least the nylon displays, by X-ray, orientation along the filament axis, is melt spun into continuous filaments by a process comprising: (a) subjecting a molten polyester/nylon mixture to mixing shear which brings the average diameter of the polyester particles dispersed in the nylon to a value D, in microns, given by where P is the parts by weight of the minor ingredient of the blend per 100 parts thereof, and C is the number of rings in the polyester chain unit; (b) flowing this dispersion through each spinneret capillary at apparent shear having a velocity gradient of at least 3000 sec.<SP>-1</SP>, and (c) maintaining in the melt from the exit out of the mixing zone up to the spinneret a temperature of 275 Œ 10‹ C. Preferably the spinneret capillary converges towards its exit with an apex angle not exceeding 60 degrees, the conditions being such that the melt bulge does not exceed 1À4 mm. when the maximum spinneret capillary cross-section is up to 0À35 mm., and the die swell factor is not above 4 when said dimension exceeds 0À35 mm. The polymer's moisture contents should preferably not exceed 0À02%. The product, when fully drawn, has on average, at least 15,000 fibrils of polyester per 1000 sq. microns of filament cross-section, said fibrils having a length: diameter ratio of at least 1500: 1. Specified polymers are nylon 6 and nylon 66, and polyethylene-terephthalate, -2,6- naphthalene dicarboxylate, -isophthalate, -2,7- naphthalene dicarboxylate, and polyhexamethylene - 4,4<SP>1</SP> - diphenylsulphone dicarboxylate. The drawn yarn may be heat-relaxed. In spinning, the quench stack of Specification 1,117,947 may be used.
