Abstract
1,201,693. Tube expanding; stamping. KOCKS WERMELSKIRCHEN G.m.b.H., [trading as FRIEDRICH KOCKS]. 13 Aug., 1968 [1 Sept., 1967], No. 38644/68. Headings B3J and B3Q. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for calibrating pipes comprises a housing, a ring of die segments, a cylindrical sleeve bearing on the inner or outer faces of the segments and forming with the housing a chamber receiving fluid under pressure for moving the sleeve to expand or contract the die segments, and stops for engaging the ends of the segments to limit expansion or contraction of a pipe. In an example for expanding pipes 10, Fig. 3, e.g. to facilitate welding or to improve the physical properties of the material, leaf springs (2), Fig. 2 (not shown), are disposed between the die segments 1 which are contracted by annular springs 6. The sleeve 3 is of rubber, and shoulders on the housing's flanges 4, 5 act as stops for the segments. An outer ring-die 9 may be used, and the length of the pipe may be expanded in sections, or an adjustable stop may locate the housing. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the ends (41b) of the segments are formed as radial pistons for returning the segments by pressure fluid contained in a vessel (40). In another construction, Fig. 6, the die 51 contracts the pipe 10, preferably on to a mandrel 60 and against the bias of springs 66. Leafsprings are located between the segments. This construction may be adapted, Fig. 7 (not shown), for return of the dies by pressure fluid. The pipe expander, Fig. 8, is adapted also for pressure testing. An end-plate 82 seals the housing, the inner end of which is also sealed by packing 85c expanded by the testing fluid in the pipe. Pipes may be fed to the expander or contractor on roller tables, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), or the tool may be fed, Fig. 11 (not shown), over or into a stationary pipe. A travelling tool may engage each end of the pipe, Fig. 12 (not shown), which is supported resiliently. Travelling expanders may also be adapted for testing.
