Abstract

[Also in Division A6] A vehicle turntable installation, for use with ferries, comprises a turntable 1 mounted within a well 3 defined in a floor 4, the turntable being raised and lowered on air cushions formed by supplying air to four neoprene-proofed nylon skirts 15 from motor-driven fans 8 through pipes 10. The turntable is rot atable about a central spindle and may be braked by a pad, mounted on an hydraulic ram, which engages the periphery of the turntable. The turntable may be either manually or mechanically rotated and prevented from rotation by a pin passing through a hole therein into a corresponding hole in the floor of the well. A pair of hydraulic rams may be used to raise the turntable if the air supply fails. A stop 6 locates the vehicles 5 on the turntable. In use on a ferry the turntable is lowered during a voyage to prevent movement of the vehicles on the ferry deck and also to lower the centre of gravity of the ferry. An air bag 52 may further be used to prevent movement of the vehicles 5 by enveloping them. Air is supplied from a fan 53 and elastic strings 56 raise the bag during deflation.
