Abstract

1,198,905. Motorized wheelchairs. R. G. BIDDLE. 15 May, 1969 [16 May, 1968], No. 23277/68. Heading B7H. A motorized wheelchair comprises a pair of side frames 10, 11 between which a seat 22 and a backrest 21 are disposed, and an electric motor 33 carried by each side frame, each electric motor having a projecting output shaft 41 which carries a driving wheel 31 and affords the sole support for the wheel. The casing of each motor 33 is secured by bolts 34 to a plate 32 at the front of the side frame, and each output shaft 41 projects through an aperture 42 in the plate and has a bushing 43 welded in the wheel 31 connected thereto by a key 45. Each output shaft 41 is driven from the motor shaft through reduction gearing 35, 36, 38, 39. The motors 33 are supplied from batteries carried in a detachable casing 46, and their operation is controlled from a control box 28 including a lever arranged to actuate four micro-switches in such a way that forward or rearward movement causes both motors 33 to drive the chair in a forward or rearward direction respectively and movement of the lever to the left or right causes rearward drive by the left-hand motor and forward drive by the right-hand motor or vice versa so that the chair turns to the left or right respectively. The control box 28 also includes a switch whereby the motors are selectively supplied by all or only some of the batteries to provide two forward speeds. A pair of castor wheels 29 are provided at the rear of the chair. The side frames 10, 11 are collapsibly connected by a plurality of linkages 16, 17, 18. The backrest 21 and seat 22 are formed by sheets of flexible material, and a further sheet of flexible material 23 provides a parcel shelf.
