Abstract

[Also in Division Fl] A fibre-resin article for use at high temperatures is made by compression moulding a plurality of partially cured segments from a mixture of randomly oriented fibres and resin, assembling the segments, and finally subjecting the assembled segments to heat and pressure in order to fuse the segments into a unitary article and to cure the resin. The segments have a density of at least 90% of the desired final density and some orientation of the fibres may occur during compression. The fibres may be refractory such as silica, carbon, graphite, asbestos or may be P.T.F.E. and may be dispersed in a phenolic resin matrix. In the embodiment shown in the figures, an ablative rocket nozzle exit cone 10, comprising assembled segments and covered by an outer layer 14 of e.g. filament wound or tape wound glass fabric, is sandwiched between a rigid mould 27 and a flexible membrane 31. The assembly is located within a heated pressure vessel 26 and is subjected to unifying and curing conditions, any volatilized material being removed from the assembly through a vacuum line 32. Other articles that can be made include chemical treatment equipment, crucible liners, heat exchangers, valves, or pipes.
