Abstract

1,197,777. Retractive switches. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. 22 Nov., 1967 [23 Nov., 1966], No. 53184/67. Heading H15. A push-button snap-action switch comprises fixed contacts 36, 38, carried respectively on terminal strips 18, 20 shaped as shown and located in a moulded plastics housing 12 by means of slots 24 and projections 26 and 28, and a change-over moving contact 60 on an arm 54 pivoted at P 2 on an L-shaped member 42, which is itself pivoted at P 1 on a terminal strip 22 located in the housing 12 by a slot 24 and projection 30. A tension spring coupled to arm 54 passes through an aperture (72, Fig. 3, not shown) in member 42 to an anchor pin insulatedly mounted in housing 12. This spring urges arm 54 into a groove 52 in member 42 and thereby urges a curved portion 48 of member 42 against an operating button 76 which straddles a notched portion of strip 18 and is further guided by lugs 90 integral wth housing 12. A cover (not shown) is fitted by complementary configured lugs thereon received in apertures 14 in housing 12. Button 76 is depressed by a further button 78, which may act via a spring lever (91, Fig. 4, not shown), and causes snap-over of contact 60 with a distinct sliding action on the fixed contacts. The travel of button 76 is limited by its abutment with strip 18 such that the line of action of the spring along arm 54 (through the pivot point P 2 does not pass below pivot point P 1 and hence an upward force is still exerted on member 42 and button 76, whereby retraction occurs as soon as button 78 is released.
