Abstract

1,197,721. Method for producing uniform copolymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 June, 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 13069/66. Headings C3G and C3P. [Also in Division B1] A method for producing uniform copolymers from two or more monomers having different reaction rates comprises feeding at least a portion of monomer having higher reaction rate to the reaction mixture at a rate dependent on the rate of production of heat in the copolymer formation. The method is suitably applied to a monomer mixture comprising (a) at least one vinyl monomer having an electron-withdrawing group, e.g. acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, α- acetoxy acrylonitrile, cinnamonitrile, chloroacrylonitrile, fumaronitrile, maleonitrile, maleic anhydride, vinyl methyl (or ethyl) ether or vinyl methyl sulphone and (b) at least one monomer selected from styrene, styrene derivatives, vinyl naphthalene, acenaphthylene, vinyl phenanthrene, indene, coumarone, vinyl pyridines, vinyl thiophene, vinyl carbazole, vinyl acetate, butadiene, isoprene, vinyl chloride, isobutene or methylpentene. It is particularly suited for monomer mixtures containing at least 50 mole per cent of acrylonitrile; such mixtures may be polymerized in the presence of a preformed polymer, e.g. a diene rubber, to form graft copolymers. In examples acrylonitrile is copolymerized with styrene or α-methylstyrene in aqueous emulsion using ammonium persulphate/sodium metabisulphite initiator in the presence of butane-thiol or octane-thiol; sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate is used to terminate (and also to control) the polymerization reaction. Also, in one example, acrylonitrile and styrene are graft copolymerized on to a butadieneacrylonitrile rubber in an aqueous medium using the same initiator and reaction-terminating agent as in the other examples. Special forms of apparatus for effecting the polymerization including means for measuring the heat produced in the reaction are described (see Division B1).
