Abstract
1475449 Copolymerization of styrene/acrylonitrile LABOFINA SA 27 Feb 1975 [1 March 1974 24 Oct 1974] 8272/75 Heading C3P A process for the production of copolymers of styrene (including other vinyl aromatic monomers) and acrylonitrile (including methacrylonitrile) comprises effecting the copolymerization in the presence of 2,2<SP>1</SP>-dithiobis(benzothiazole) in an amount of at least 0À001 weight per cent, based on the weight of total monomer. The preferred process comprises: (i) mass copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of at least 0À001% by weight, based on the total weight of monomer, of 2,2<SP>1</SP>- dithiobis(benzothiazole) as molecular weight regulator at a temperature of 75-125‹ C. until a copolymer mass is formed of viscosity 10,000- 100,000 cPs. (at 65‹ C.) wherein 10-30 mole per cent of the monomers have been polymerized; (ii) adding an aqueous dispersion of a suspending agent and a non-ionic or anionic surfactant, and stirring the mixture at a temperature of 75-150‹ C. in the presence of a free-radical generating catalyst. The copolymerization may be effected in the presence of a rubber wherein the mixture comprises 65-90% by weight of styrene, 35-10% by weight of acrylonitrile and 7-15% by weight of rubber, all percentages being based on the total weight of the monomers. The examples describe the copolymerization of styrene (St)/acrylonitrile (AN), St/AN/amethylstyrene, St/AN/methacrylonitrile, St/AN /p - chlorostyrene; and St/AN in the presence of rubber.
