Abstract

1,197,368. De-gassing polyesters of #-lactones. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 26 Aug., 1968, No. 40716/68. Heading C3R. Moulding pellets &c. of #-lactone polyesters having a gassing tendency of below 0À2, are made by heating the polyester in the molten state, at a temperature of at least 275‹ C., whilst removing the gases set free, and thereafter shaping the polyester to pellets &c. The heating is preferably effected under pressure in a single- or multi-screw extruder possibly with a venting section at atmospheric or subatmospheric pressure, so the gas can escape. The polyester may also contain degassing additives as disclosed in Specification 1,183,436, pigments, dyes, fillers or nucleating agents. The polyester is one which has not been above its melting point during its preparation, e.g. one prepared by slurry polymerization. Examples describe the degassing of poly- (pivalolactone).
